I just finished Shanghai Baby a 2007 movie based on the 2001 semi-autobiographical novel by Wei Hui.
What a show. The movie focuses on Coco, a Shanghai girl who cheats on her impotent Chinese boyfriend with an English businessman. Coco can’t stop herself and continues her liaison with the white man while her boyfriend slides into heroin addiction and overdoses.
Needless to say, the Chinese Communist Party immediately banned the film and the book it’s based upon was burned in the streets by enraged Chinese men.
I think Miss Wei hit a nerve…
